Service Description
We all want be well, be happy and be content but attaining these simple goals seems so difficult. The world expects us to be endless buying things and to gain through the misfortune of others. How can we get out of this cycle and find liberation? These conflicts were evident to the Wise as long ago as 4000 BC and they began to reflect on the condition of man. They noticed patterns of behaviour and how we thought and the traps we fall into. In short - they began the enquiry into who we are. They wrote down their ancient wisdom, and created tools and language with which to engage the questions that arose. It seemed to them that quieting the mind to allow finer qualities to ‘float up’ would be a good start. That practice is meditation: a discipline that exists in some form in almost every society and philosophy and which is practiced by millions of people. We are offering a structured look at how we live as humans in the modern world, what gets in the way of our finest aspirations and intentions and how we can use tools like meditation to help us realise a calmer and more fulfilling life. Each session will spend time looking at the practice of simply falling still and letting go of impediments, leading to the practice of meditation. By the end of the first term the student will be meditating confidently and comfortably for 20 minutes each day. The posture of the body is vital to this and lessons from yoga and other disciplines are included to help the body find a comfortable position for meditation. These include understanding the role of breath and how we balance our daily life. Each session includes opportunity to discuss what is experienced and for the group to respond to questions that arise. We will draw lessons from the historical context and philosophical texts and the lessons of the wise. The texts range from the earliest philosophies through to modern thought, but the focus is mostly guided by the practical philosophies of Vedanta in which our own observable behaviours and thoughts are the starting points. Each week a quotation will be given for students to reflect during the week and to discuss at the next session. The sources of the quotations will be (amongst others); The Bhagavad Gita The Upanishads The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali The works of Plato The writings of Western philosophers and Literature - such as T.S Eliot, Shakespeare and many others. John lives in Suffolk and is a practicing musician and writer having spend much of his earlie
